Today I am
A small blue thing
Like a marble
Or an eye
With my knees against my mouth
I am perfectly round
I am watching you
I am cold against your skin
You are perfectly reflected
I am lost inside your pocket
I am lost against your fingers
I am falling down the stairs
I am skipping on the sidewalk
I am thrown against the sky
I am raining down in pieces
I am scattering like light
Scattering like light
Scattering like light
Today I am
A small blue thing
Made of china
Made of glass
I am cool and smooth and curious
I never blink
I am turning in your hand
Turning in your hand
Small blue thing
Suzanne Vega, "Small Blue Thing", off the album "Suzanne Vega"
Suzanne Vega is one of the most solid, outstanding artists in today's music world. She began her work long before it was "cool" to be a female vocalist, and has never left her path of evocative, meaningful, and powerful songs.
I once heard an interview in which she tried to explain how she writes her songs - much like Raymond Carver her stripped to the bone, lyrics, create a much stronger emotional response to her songs than would a long, outpour of words. The situations, and people in her songs are unsettling, but this feeling of unsetlement comes as much from one's personal interpretation of the situations insinuated by the words.
My favourite Suzanne Vega album is still "Suzanne Vega", her debut. But "Solitude Standing" (well known for the song "Luka"), 99.9 F, and the latest - Nine Objects of Desire are beautiful albums too. Favourite song, is actually songs and they include - Small Blue Thing, The Queen and the Soldier, Liverpool, and Luka.
